Synopsis - 2
Theme/Issue – Unrequited Love (Youth)
A quiet industrial side road on a dull day. A young boy and girl appear and walk along together. The girl walks at a faster pace than the boy. He breathes in discontent and reluctantly jogs to catch up to her. The female has one earphone in, on her right hand side. They boy awkwardly makes an attempt to initiate conversation, the girl gives no reply. The boy looks downwards toward the ground. There appears to be a small gap between the two as they walk on. The boy tries to start another conversation with the girl, she disregards him once again. They continue to walk on. The boy slowly pulls an envelope from his pocket. His hand shakes while holding it, he almost drops it. The envelope reads ‘Michelle’. He raises the card to the girl, but hesitates to show it to her. The girl pulls out her earphone and asks what it is. He hides it behind his back without telling her. The boy breathes heavily without looking at the girl. He tries again to talk to the girl but stutters his words. In the process, he drops the envelope in a small puddle on the pavement. He looks back at it, but does not want to look distracted from her, so he leaves it behind. The girl does not notice anything so she does not respond and continues to focus on herself, she fixes her scarf tighter. The boy notices that the end of the road is close. He mumbles a few words which aren’t understandable. He goes on to tell her that he knows how passionate she is about music. He murmurs that he has written her some lyrics. She suddenly stops, takes her earphone out while looking certainly enthused. He downplays the idea of his lyrics but she urges him to read them to her. He tells her that he can’t read them, he can only sing them. The girl grows a large smile on her face and asks him to perform them to her. The boy has had a swift change in confidence and goes backwards to pick the envelope up from the puddle, he is momentarily excited. As he approaches the puddle he smiles to himself in disbelief. But before he picks them up he looks down into the puddle and quietly whispers to himself. He tells himself in whisper that he shouldn’t be wasting his time trying to gain her love. He decides to give it a go anyhow, telling himself he has nothing to lose. He sings his lyrics to her in a fairly enjoyable melody. The girl peacefully giggles and smiles while watching him. She stares into his eyes while watching. While she is watching him she is completely focused on him. She seems to now see something attractive in him. She bites her lip. However, As she is watching him perform, the boy suddenly stops singing and annoyingly says to himself he’s wasting his time. She returns to her previous state of emotion. She acknowledges his feelings by touching his arm and telling him that she was remarkably impressed. He looks at her hand on his arm, contently. Whilst looking at her hand on his arm he seems to be in somewhat of a shock-like daydream. After a few silent seconds pass he looks up and pleads to her that she does not understand the concept of the lyrics. He tells her that he thought he was in love with her, but has recently accepted that they’re just friends. She bluntly agrees with him, telling him they’re just friends. He takes a breath of relief and says goodbye. They walk to the end of the road and each go off in separate directions.
