Final Synopsis

Theme/Issue – Unrequited Love (Youth)

A quiet industrial side road on a dull day. A teenage boy and girl appear and walk along together. The girl walks at a faster pace than the boy. He jogs to catch up with her. The girl has one earphone in. The boy awkwardly makes an attempt to initiate conversation; the girl gives no reply. The boy looks downwards toward the ground. There is a small gap between the two as they walk on. The boy tries to start another conversation with the girl; she answers monosyllabically. They continue to walk on. The boy slowly pulls an envelope from his pocket. He almost drops it. The envelope reads ‘Michelle’. He raises the envelope to the girl, but hesitates to show it to her. The girl stops. The girl pulls out her earphone and asks what it is. He hides it behind his back without telling her. He tries again to talk to the girl but stutters, and drops the envelope in a small puddle on the pavement. He looks down at it, she glances at it too and then back at him. She fixes her scarf and continues walking. He catches up with her. They continue to walk. The end of the road is approaching. He mumbles a few words which aren’t understandable. He goes on to tell her that he knows how passionate she is about music. He murmurs that he has written her some lyrics. She suddenly stops and takes her earphone out. He downplays the idea of his lyrics but she urges him to read them to her. He tells her that he can’t read them, he can only sing them. She asks him to sing it. The boy goes backwards to pick the envelope up from the puddle. He returns to the girl, hands her the envelope. She opens it. He begins to sing, she listens. The boy suddenly stops singing and says he’s wasting his time. She touches his arm and tells him to continue. He continues to sing. At the end they stand in silence for several seconds. He looks up and suggests that she does not understand the concept of the lyrics. She tells him that she doesn’t want to be involved with anyone right now. He humorously repeats what she says, asking it as a question. She solemnly tells him that that is the case. He takes a breath of relief and says goodbye. They walk to the end of the road and each go off in separate directions.
